Salton Sea Coalition

who we are | our members | how we got here | where we are going

The Salton Sea Coalition is comprised of 13 organizations of varied interests and backgrounds that have joined together to support and advocate for the protection and revitalization of the Salton Sea -- an important part of California's natural, cultural and agricultural heritage. The Coalitionís environmental and recreation groups, as well as two local tribes, represent more than 1.3 million people.

We believe that a successful Salton Sea Ecoystem Restoration plan should:

Protect and restore fish and wildlife in and around the Salton Sea. The restoration should provide permanent protection for the estuaries, river and creek deltas, shoreline, shallow waters and islands in the Sea that support birds, desert pupfish and other wildlife. It should provide deep water to support a fishery for both birds and people. Finally, the plan should protect and enhance wildlife-friendly agriculture in the Imperial Valley.

Improve air and water quality to protect public health as well as fish and wildlife. The restoration should ensure that the water flowing into the Sea does not pose health risks for people, fish and wildlife. It should also ensure that the project will not worsen the air quality for the residents of the Imperial and Coachella Valleys.

Protect cultural values and economic opportunities at the Sea. The restoration should create sustainable economic opportunities for local residents and preserve important cultural sites.
